Tips for Caring for Your Children’s Eyes

During this unprecedented time in our lives, it is important to take care of our overall physical and mental health. We at North Georgia Eye Clinic are here to help and provide you some important reminders and tips.

Most children are currently being homeschooled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As you are diligently working with your little ones with their schoolwork, it is important to remember the 20-20-20 rule. This rule states that for every 20 minutes of digital use, you should pause for 20 seconds and focus on something 20 feet away. This can help prevent digital eye strain for your homeschooler.

Be aware of signs and symptoms that your child may be experiencing when reading or writing, such as squinting, avoidance of near tasks, an eye turning inward or outward during any part of the day, holding paperwork in close proximity to the face, or complaints of headaches and/or blurry vision. These are all signs of visual conditions that need to be addressed by your eye doctor.

Additional tips are provided below to help ensure your child‘s eyes are always protected:

  • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds after playing outside.
  • Do not rub the face or eyes if possible.
  • Wear sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Take frequent breaks from electronic devices.
  • Use artificial tears as needed.
  • Call your eyecare provider if you or your child experience any visual conditions described above, including eye pain, vision loss, etc.

Please remember that the doctors and staff of North Georgia Eye Clinic are here for you and your family.
